Do Not Disrespect The Dress DIY Glitter Booties

Love at first sight. We have different interpretations of the word, but Gwyneth and I think Kate Spades Kleo Booties look pretty yummy.

Love turned to complete and total obsession after we bought this Marchesa Notte dress for next weeks black tie Christmas party.

But with several options to shop from in our closet, spending $598.00 on a pair of very memorable boots was just not going to happen. And then we decided that if other ambitious friends in the blogosphere were DIY-ing their own versions of some very elaborate Miu Miu booties, then maybe we had a shot at DIY-ing our relatively simple Kleo Booties. (Check out Bethanys DIY if you want to be super impressed).

After rich discussion, Gwyneth and I made a pact. No matter how much love we put into this project and no matter how emotionally attached we became to the dream, we would not lose objectivity. We would not disrespect our dress with 3rd grade-level arts and crafts DIY booties. If they turned out this way, wed call it entertainment and move on.

So well share what we did with you, on the condition that you give us your candid feedback. Because we completely lost objectivity after all. Here we go

Supplies:

  1. A pair of booties that we were emotionally prepared to part with in case the DIY went awry
  2. A tupperware container
  3. Mod Podge Satin All-in-One Decoupage Sealer / Glue / Finish
  4. Black glitter
  5. A small paintbrush
  6. Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating (in the spray paint section of your local hardware store)
  7. A medium sized box

Total cost = $13.97, about the price of a movie ticket, so in line with our entertainment rationalization.

First, we mixed Mod Podge and glitter until we reached a thick, but spreadable consistency.

Then, we painted the entire bootie, except for the heel with the mixture. The box came in handy here, minimizing mess. Note: This is where we began to mourning the loss of our booties.

We then poured glitter generously over bootie and let it dry 1 hour. The box came in super handy here.

Finally, we went back and spot treated a few areas we missed and let dry another hour. We sprayed with acrylic coating and let dry overnight. Apparently, this step prevents leaving a trail of glitter.

Heres our finished product:

We are going to give it a few days before we decide to wear or not wear them. But today we are pretty pleased with the result, especially when you compare the financials: Our DIY version at $13.97 vs Kate Spades $598. A total savings of $584.03. isnt too shabby, right?

So, now we need your feedback. And remember that flattering us is the same thing as letting a friend walk around with spinach in their teeth.

Should we pick a pair from our closet, made in Italy by a legitimate designer? Or do you think our pair made in a cardboard box by an optimist and a Yorkie is the right choice? Be honest! If for no other reason do not disrespect our dress!!

xoxo,
mk & Gwyneth

  4. I think they look amazing; you should wear them! Plus, what a fun story! If youre stuck talking to someone who has nothing to say then you can just chat him/her up about your glitter DIY booties! When you walk around in them, do you leave behind a trail of glitter?! Because thats actually kind of fun, although not in your own house preferably. HA!

  6. You guys are making it hard!

Nancie, not sure if my mom knows about this yet. (MOM are you reading?!?! I am waiting for your feedback, please!!) BUT definitely appreciate your POV on this. We share the concern; hence, the debate!

Nan, word on the streets is that the acrylic coating prevents a trail of fairy dust. Definitely worth a test drive, to be sure. And your point on conversation starter is a good one.

Chandler, than you! You know Ive been eager to get your take on this, as the source of the fabulous dress!

ARG! Such a tough one! Thank goodness for time to decide Lacing up the running shoes for now because squeezing into it DEFINITELY does not respect the dress!!
