5 Dreamy Canopy DIYs

We’ve gotten a few questions about our canopy recently, so Gwyneth and I thought we’d share how we put together our version and some other DIY takes that we think are pretty dreamy.

If you’ve been following, you know that most of what we do is designed to solve a small-space challenge, and most of our ideas come from my Mom. Our canopy was no exception. With our bedroom footprint being only slightly larger than our bed, we needed to draw the eye up to create the illusion of space. Without a real bed frame, we had no idea how to make it happen. Then Mom sent us this photo from Better Homes & Gardens:

Floor to ceiling fabric created the illusion of space, and swing arm cranes as fixtures meant we could recreate this with minimal investment. Sign. Us. Up.

While Gwyneth and I picked up two Restoration Hardware Swing Arm Cranes, Mom got to work sewing our canopy. She found a sheer linen and bought enough to cover the height of our cranes and width of our bed, plus an extra yard to allow for draping between the cranes and puddles on the floor. And because she knows we love an embellishment, she added small white pom-pom trim to one side.
When our canopy arrived from North Carolina, we secured the cranes with drywall anchors and draped the fabric across. (Gwyneth and I write this realizing that we didn’t do any of the sewing), but it was that easy!

So there’s our Better Homes & Gardens inspired version! Here are four others that we find rather charming.

Elle Decor featured these dramatic curtains hung from ceiling mounted rods:

While definitely more than a weekend project, this wood panelled headboard from House to Home is a serious statement! We also love that this surface works for hanging a mini chandelier.

Rie over at Home and Harmony created this dreamy tent to cover a popcorn ceiling she didn’t love. Rie,  love your quilted tie shams too – we’ve got them in sage!

And Mrs. Devore over at Dwellings By Devore used Ikea panels and rods to create this soft canopy.
Proof that canopies aren’t only for Marie Antoinette!
