A Dumpster Dive That Does Double Duty

When Gwyneth and I saw a couple pull down the back door of their U-Haul, and place this chest next to the dumpster, part of me wanted to run after them and convince them they could definitely find space for it in their new home. Another part of me wanted to tell them that they were double parked and should move along. No decision necessary. The couple drove away, and 5 minutes later Gwyneth was striking a pose in front of her find.

Once we gathered our supplies, I took the chest apart while Gwyneth supervised.

Gwyneth closely inspected my work as I sanded for what felt like an eternity

for both of us.

There were a few damaged areas on our chest, so we repaired them with wood filler.

We had a little more sanding after the wood filler was dry, and we were finally ready to paint!
Hardare got a quick blast of Krylon Metallic Brass Spray Paint, leftover from our Brass Figurines, and we painted the chest with two coats of Benjamin Moores Spring Green Semi Gloss Paint. We were skeptical when the gentleman at the store told us it was primer, paint and sealer all in one, but he was right!

With some easy reassembly the next morning, we turned our Dumpster Dive chest into a new piece that does double duty as a nightstand and linen closet!

Next up? Finding a new home for our previous nightstand.

We have reached capacity and think storage might be the best answer. But if youve taken our Apartment Tourand have another suggestion, you know were dying to hear it!

mk & Gwynnie

  1. love it! and what a cheery color. i vote put the old nightstand in the bathroom if you need extra storage or a place for towels/soaps orrr near the window in your living room (by the heater) and put plants on it.

  2. Thank you! Such a great ideas for the nightstand placement. I think the bathroom might be a little tight, but I am going to give it a try tonight. Next to the heater will definitely work! Thank you again!

  31. How do you spray paint inside and not have splatters all over the place? Youre amazing, and have the Midas touch, thats for sure!

    • Meredith & Gwyneth says:

We dont know about the Midas Touch, but we do know weve got a can of Krylon Metallic Gold spray paint handy at all times!

Our spray painting technique is probably not the best, but its the best weve come up with so farwe open our big window and cover nearby surfaces with craft paper drop cloths before we get going. Well pull the biggest box we can find out of the recycling and put whatever were painting inside to contain any splatters. Then Gwyneth gets an extra long walk while the project dries, and the apartment is airing out. Were sure theres a better way, but havent found one yet. If you can think of one, please let us know! (Although Gwyneth really likes the long walks that come with our current method!)

      xoxo,
      mk Gwyneth
