When Renting Is Right

Considering the substantial down payments, New York City is one of the places where renting can be a better financial move than buying. This was certainly the case for us when we moved to NYC. And now, we’re starting to think that there are occasions where this theory also applies to cocktail dresses. We’re talking about Rent the Runway.

Bethany, our dear friend (and author of must-read blog, B Soup), was way ahead of us on this one. So much so, that she’s won Rent the Runway’s Style Award twice. Once in Tibi’s Calla Lily Cap Sleeve Dress and again in Bryan Reyes’ Watercolor Wonder Dress:

Gwyneth and I actually own the Tibi dress. After seeing Bethany in it, we’re considering turning it into a pillow. But she’s convinced us to give RTR a try, and the time to try is right around the corner.
Later this month, Gwyneth and I will head down to North Carolina for one of our favorite events of the year, the Spring Soiree to benefit Students of AMF. Students of AMF is an organization started by a dear friend of ours, dedicated to supporting college students grieving the illness or loss of a loved one. It’s a cause close to our hearts, and the event is an absolute blast!
So let’s talk about what we’re going to wear. We’ve perused the selection, and we’d like your help narrowing down our options! These three options are certainly appropriate choices for an event named the Spring Soiree:
Prabal Gurung Darling Rose Dress
Milly Eva Sheath Dress
Shoshanna Floral Dixie Dress
The Prabal Gurung is our very favorite dress (possibly ever), but we’re slightly apprehensive that these could read “Girl in town from NYC playing SJP / Carrie Bradshaw.” Fair, right? Right.
So let’s consider these three options – also highly appropriate, but with lower “we-look-like-we’re-playing-dress-up” risk:
Sachin + Babi Petal to The Metal Dress
Robert Rodriguez Lace Shift Dress
Trina Turk Seashell Lace Bateau Shift Dress
Or what about these ladylike options:
Robert Rodriguez Modern Juliet Dress
Moschino Middleton Jeweled Dress
Matthew Williamson Indian Beaded Sheath
And these geometric strapless dresses also have great potential:
Nanette Lepore Want Me Dress
Cuchine et Ochs My Boyfriend Dress
Shoshanna Optical Bustier Dress

As you can see, we need your help! We’ve got to reserve one of these stunners this week, so please let us know which one you think we should go with!

Much more importantly –  If you are near Raleigh, NC, you can purchase tickets to the Spring Soiree here. Not nearby? No problem. Here’s how you can still get involved with Students of AMF.

  1. Oh, I love the Prabal! I don’t think it’s too fakey-dressy-uppy at all, only of you put it next to SJP will people maybe raise a eyebrow. Really,I think it’s lovely! Plus, you’ll look stunning in it.

But, if you decide against it, I like the lilac lace shift a lot too. Very spring-y.

  2. Prabal! I mean, go big or go home! can you imagine the compliments??

  3. Prabal, for sure!

  4. The Prabal has been rented! Thank you, ladies!!
