You’ve heard it a few thousand times: When you’re on a budget, it’s best to stick to the classics and avoid trendy items. As sequin, fringe and just-about-any-other-possible-embellishment enthusiasts, Gwyneth and I find that advice pretty uninspiring. We also think it’s nonsense. Instead, we’d propose that any trend-loving gal-on-a-budget can shop her closet for a classic and get going on a DIY. That’s exactly what we did, and our classic black pumps got an update with these DIY Faux Fur Pom-Pom Shoe Clips.
Got $10 and ten minutes? Here’s what you’ll need to make a set of your own:
1. 2 faux fur pom-poms, each 3″ in diameter (We picked ours up from M&J Trimming.)
2. 2 alligator clips
3. 2 scraps of fabric, each roughly 1.5″ x 1′
4. A glue gun and sticks
First, pinch your alligator clip open, and thread the strings attached to your pom-pom through the clip’s opening. Tie a knot at the base of the clip, so your pom-pom is loosely attached.
Next, cover one of your fabric scraps with glue from your glue gun. Slide the fabric between the opened “jaws” of your alligator clip, so the side with the glue is facing the fur. Press and hold for a few seconds, so the bottom of the pop-pom is attached to your fabric scrap. Using a fabric scrap here will give your pom-pom a larger and more secure base, and it will protect the uppers of your heels from the teeth on the alligator claw. (You want your heels to look great in the unlikely event that you take off the pom-poms.)
Now for the hard part. Go pick which pair of shoes you’re going to wear them with first.
