{DIY} Accessories Closet

Gwyneth and I were recently asked to makeover a piece of furniture as part of the Wayfair & Hometalk DIY Challenge. By transforming the Furinno Pine 3 Tier Bookcase into our very own Accessories Closet we found a way to keep our baubles organized and accessible. No more tangled necklaces or out of sight, out of mind jewels!

If you love accessorizing as much as we do, then perhaps your baubles could benefit from some organization. To make your own DIY Accessories Closet youll need:

  1. The Furinno Pine 3 Tier Bookcase
  2. Spraypaint (We used 2 cans of Krylon Black Enamel Gloss)
  3. 4 square corkboard tiles
  4. Enough fabric to cover the corkboard tiles
  5. A glue gun
  6. Gorilla glue or other strong adhesive
  7. A level
  8. 2 small wall brackets
  9. 4 wall anchors
  10. A power drill
  11. Shower curtain rings

First, we assembled the bookcase according to the package instructions, so we had a better idea of what we were working with. As we assembled the bookcase, we decided that we could make the piece work as an Accessories Closet by making a few tweaks to the assembly. Here it is assembled based on the instructions (without the feet or back side cross bars).

Once we decided which tweaks wed make, we took the unit apart and gave the pieces two coats of spray paint.

Once the pieces were dry, we reassembled the unit with our changes. We turned the bookcase upside down and turned the bottom two shelves wrong side up before attaching to the end pieces. Our last change was to use only one of the back side cross bars (on bottom third section of our unit).

We wanted to make the most of our Accessories Closet, so we decided to use the side panels as mini bulletin boards.  Were forever ripping outfit ideas from magazines, and now well have them handy during our daily closet-full-of-clothes-and-nothing-to-wear dilemma.

To make our mini bulletin boards, we cut pieces of cork board tile to fit the sides of our Accessories closet.

Each side of the bookcase got two pieces of corkboard, one stacked on top of the other vertically.

We laid the two pieces of corkboard on top of ivory geometric matelasse fabric and wrapped it like a present, gluegunning the fabric down on the inside of each cork panel.

Then we used Gorilla Glue to adhere our mini cork boards to each end of our Accessories closet (not pictured). Then we got to work mounting our Accessories closet to the wall. We installed two brackets (each with two wall anchors) to the wall in our closet. Then we rested the top shelf of our Accessories Closet on top of the brackets.

At last we began finding homes for all of our jewels! We used 2 packages of shower curtain hangers along the bottom rungs of our Accessories Closet to hang necklaces

and we pinned our outfit inspiration tear outs to the corkboard.

Below the shelving unit, we placed our black console table as a home for our jewelry box, jewelry trays and dishes and a framed Kate Spade quote we love.

The second shelf is home to our perfume tray and a few more baubles.

And the top shelf is now storage for our summer scarves and hats.

To the right of our Accessories Closet, we have hooks to hang longer necklaces, hats and the next outfit were planning on wearing.

As Gwyneth pointed out, our Accessories Closet should make getting ready in the morning a breeze now freeing up more time for a longer walk around the neighborhood! A big thank you to Wayfair and Hometalk for asking to be a part of the DIY challenge as you can see, were both so grateful!

xoxo,

    Meredith and Miss Gwynnie,

I have no doubt you two could make a 4 bedroom house out of 6 boards, a dozen nails, and a handle.
