If your Mom is as fashion forward as mine is, and you want to give her a handmade gift, then this DIY’s for you! Our dear blogging friend, Kelly from Live Laugh Rowe has created a series of great handmade Mother’s Day DIY Gifts, and you’ll want to check each of them out too! (Yesterday A Pumpkin & A Princess posted a recipe for Homemade Citrus Bath Salts that we will definitely be making soon!)
To make your own DIY Rope & Rhinestone Necklace you will need:
- 1.5 feet 3/4″ rope (We bought ours at Home Depot)
- 3 colors of leather cording (2 feet of each color)
- 1 foot large rhinestone chain
- 1 foot medium rhinestone chain
- 1 packet thin waxed cording
- 2 jump rings
- A toggle closure
- A small pair of scissors
- A set of jewelry pliers
This DIY takes about an hour and a half to do, unless you have a helper standing by giving you this look. Then you’ll need to account for frequent play breaks.
Naturally, we took a play break before we got started. Then we braided the three colors of leather cording.
Next, we pinned the braid to your rope, winding it around the large rhinestone chain, in between each rhinestone. Then we pinned to the rope at the other end.
Then we took our medium rhinestone chain and separated it into 1, 2, 3 and 4 rhinestone pieces. This made the fringe that hangs from the necklace. Once we had our individual pieces of rhinestone fringe, we used our jewelry pliers to pop off the rhinestone at the end. We used our waxed cording to tie a knot, and slid the knot into the back of the open setting, so a 2″ piece of waxed cording came through the top.
Then we popped the rhinestone back in the setting and used our jewelry pliers to secure.
Once each of our pieces of fringe was finished, we flipped our rope necklace over and used the ends of the waxed cording to secure to the three colored braid on the back side of the necklace.
Then we flipped our necklace over to make sure the fringe is exactly how we wanted it.
Finally, we used a small dot of glue to secure the ends of the three colored braid to the underside of the rope and cut off any loose ends. We used our jump rings to attach your toggle closure, and we were all set!
A big thanks to Kelly for asking us to be a part of her Mother’s Day Handmade Series! We had a blast working on our necklace and were so inspired by all the other amazing projects! Be sure to check them all out by clicking on the banner below!
