{Organization} The 5 Major Must Haves For A Clothes Horses Small, Organized Closet

Our new apartment in San Francisco has many features that were out of our budget in New York. While were loving our outdoor space, our separate bedroom and having a washer and dryer of our own, we had to draw the line on the upgrades in one tragic place the closet. Our building had another one bedroom with a walk-in closet, but it was out of our budget. (Sigh).

But if you think that meant Gwyneth and I were going to leave some of our treasures behind on the East Coast, you have fallen and bumped your pretty little head. Because where theres a will and a few key supplies, theres a way to pack it all in. Today well share the five things anyone with closet space disproportionate to their love of fashion needs to keep their outfits organized.

Well have a California closet one day, but today heres how weve made ours work. Read on for the five supplies we recommend for anyone with a closet conundrum of their own.

#1 Major Must Have: Hooks

Since we needed every inch of shelf space, we decided to hang our handbags on the wall. These Threshold hooks from Target hold up to 35 pounds without using anchors, making them the right choice for storing our most frequently used handbags.

#2 Major Must Have: Bankers Boxes

If you love to pile it on as much as we do, then chances are you have more than a few small and hard-to-contain accessories in your arsenal. We love storing our small handbags and scarves in Bankers Boxes because the clear window in front of the box makes it easy to shop from when were getting dressed, and delicate items like satin clutches and scarves dont get snagged or damaged.

Plus, Bankers Boxes have lids so you can stack them on top each other where space allows. We have these two turned sideways in the top left corner of our closet to store out-of-season items, leaving more space for things we can wear now.

#3 Major Must Have: Expandable Shoe Racks

Weve tried every shoe storage solution on the market, and this 3-tier model from the Container Store is the one to get. The racks expand from 25 to 46, so you can line every available square inch of space on the floor for your footwear. The foam bars prevent slipping, so all your shoes are standing at attention and ready to report for duty!

#4 Major Must Have: Huggable Hangers

Hands down the best way to make the most of hanging space - Huggable Hangers. Aside from being super thin, theres a model with knotches in the center of the hanger, so you can add another layer of clothes without taking up more space.

#5 Major Must Have: Assorted Baskets and Bins

You can probably shop your home for miscellaneous baskets and bins to contain clothing you dont need to hang or extra shoes if youve got a little overflow from your shoe racks. Wicker baskets come with a snag factor, so keep that in mind! Weve got exercise clothing in ours. And two tubs on the floor are great storage for flip flops and sneakers.
