{Simple Pleasures} 5 Things That Made Our Tails Wag This Weekend

Like many of you, Gwyneth and I tackle the bigger domestic to-dos on the weekend, so we usually share a room update or Dumpster Dive Makeover with you on Mondays. To be honest, when it comes to making a new city and a new apartment feel like home, we prefer substantial pleasures over simple ones. But errands and appointments made this weekend more variety show than routine, so we had abandon our initial plan to re-do the living room.

Going with the flow doesnt come naturally to us. It actually hurt a little. But in 15-minute pockets of free time, we discovered five bite-sized treats scattered along the way and thought you might enjoy these simple pleasures too.

1. The 15 Minute DIY

Marbled Box DIY With Mod Podge

We pinned and picked up supplies for Centsational Girls DIY Marbled Boxes ages ago, but never actually got around to making one for ourselves. Kate promised they took 15 minutes to make, and she was right. Other than a little time, all you need is a box, craft paper (We used Marbled Mulberry Paper we found on Amazon), Mod Podge and a small paint brush. Were using ours to store extra stationary. (For another quick marbled paper DIY we love, check out this DIY Agate Trash Bin from Little Green Notebook.)

2. A Serious Steal

Usually Im on a mission when I run errands with other pedestrians peeling away on the sidewalk to make way for the six-foot-tall, grocery-bag-carrying, statement-necklace-wearing-freight-train coming at them. But since Gwyneth and I decided to go with the flow this weekend, I skipped the powerwalking, slowed down and then came to a screeching halt at Nordstrom Rack. If I hadnt slowed my roll, I might have missed the Dolce & Gabbana Pink Peony Woven Shift Dress I really, really needed.

Now, I know the word need is a stretch. I need another dress like I need a hole in my head. But this beauty was originally $1175, reduced to $176 and the only one left was my size. Its just not right to dismiss these kinds of signs from heaven. Gwyneth and I scoured the internet to find a style that was similar and similarly priced for you, and we came up short. But we think this tweed beauty from Rebecca Taylor is pretty phenomenal. Since its also full price, why not Shelf It and wait for the glorious day when youll get an email notification that the price has dropped?

Separately, can you tell what one of this weekends first errands was? Desperate for a trim, I paid a visit diPietro Todd. Since I was feeling spontaneous, I asked my stylist to do whatever she thought was best instead of giving her the standard strategic briefing with multiple photo references. Im not sure if I love the shoulder-length look. But on the plus side, I lost 5 pounds in an hour all while sitting on my tush, reading magazines and drinking Pinot Grigio.

3. Falls Prettiest Nail Palette

We know this is ridiculous, but we literally fantasize about spending a day on the couch reading magazines. Weve moved boxes (plural) of magazines from New York to Raleigh and Raleigh to San Francisco, so we really ought to read them even if the trend reports are from Spring 2010. While a full day of reading fashion and home magazines is pure fantasy, I truly enjoyed my hour reading current ones while getting my hair cut. The page I most wanted to rip out was the one with OPIs Fall line of nail polishes, inspired by the city where the climate is best described as perma-Fall San Francisco.

4. The Buy or DIY No Brainer

Another observation while out and about - this bedazzled basic from Haute Hippie. But sweats even when they sparkle should not be $395. This is definitely a project worth DIY-ing, however. Just add this jeweled trim from M&J Trimming to the gray sweatshirt youve got to have in your closet to get the look, and save $370. And this is one you can do even if you dont have a sewing machine. We used Fabric-Tac to make our DIY No Sew Feather Dress, and will probably do the same for this project soon.

5. Gwyneths Favorite Blog Post From Last Week

Theres nothing we love more than reading other blogs in pockets of free time, so Gwyneth and I caught up on all yalls projects this weekend too. Now she wont stop talking about these Homemade Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats from Live Laugh Rowe!

Gwyneth also pointed out that its been a year and a half since I made her these, and frankly, she thinks Kellys sound way tastier. Im going to have to carve out time this week to try Kellys recipe because I need Gwyneth to be super motivated next weekend when we really are going to make over the living room.

xoxo,

mk & Gwyneth

PS: Today is a big day for GwynethShe has a full-day interview at the doggie day care resort shes staying at later this week when Im out of town for work. (Paws crossed). We wrote an application that was stronger than the one that got me into college, so all she needs to do charm the staff and other guests today! Wish her luck!

  7. Pretty marbled box! OPI is one of the best when it comes to nail color and not chipping. My cat, Jiggy. is joining you with cross paws for Gwyneth who I believe will be just fine. Those furry ones do have to support one another.

    • Meredith & Gwyneth says:

Too funny! Lots of love back to Jiggy! And you are right! OPI (and Essie too) are the best for not chipping!
