Meredith & Gwyneth The New Yorkie

Welcome to Meredith & Gwyneth, the New Yorkie! We are so glad you’re here!

This blog is a story of personal style a mix of our adventures making a tiny apartment feel like home and our daily dose of playing dress up. For us, decorating and getting dressed go hand-in-hand because our approach to each is the same: Only use what you love, pile on the accessories, never fear color or pattern, and mix them liberally! And because were two gals on a budget, here youll find a hefty serving of DIYs for the home, for the closet and a little something we like to call Dumpster Diving.

While today were writing from San Francisco, this blog began as the story of our adventures in making New York City feel like home. When we moved to New York City from Raleigh, North Carolina in 2011, we didnt think it would ever feel that way. In fact, we missed the life we’d made back home so badly that after only three months in New York, I quit my job, packed up the apartment and made arrangements to head back down South. Somehow, with the apartment back in boxes, we were inspired to give NYC another shot. Since Id quit my job, Gwyneth and I had some time on our hands and decided to unpack. And because I didnt have a job, Gwyneth and I learned to work with what we had (and what we found in the dumpster near our Chelsea apartment).

We spent the summer of 2011 moving furniture, painting the walls and purging the closet. We didn’t know if we’d fall in love with NYC, but we were on a mission to fall in love with our 470 square feet of it. In the process, we realized how much we had to be thankful for, including a new appreciation for our lives as New Yorkers. How changing our environment changed our outlook was a story that we thought might inspire others, so in July of 2011, we started Meredith & Gwyneth, The New Yorkie.

Two years later, our adventures took an unexpected and 3,000 mile turn West when Gwyneth and I moved to San Francisco. Now were applying New Yorkie style to our life in California and making it feel more like home with every day.

Our readers are what inspire us to share our story, and we hope you’ll find something here that inspires you. Whether you’re catching up on the projects that made NYC feel like home, or if you want to join us on our San Francisco adventures, Gwyneth and I would love to hear from you. Email us at: [email protected] if you’ve got a suggestion for this blog, a question about a DIY or if you just want to say hi. Because we believe home is wherever we’re together, and that means you too!

  1. Aw..so sweet! Im a mom, too, and have a daughter, and son, in your age bracket, and have a heart for what youre doing to be independent. First time here, and after the rough day I had today (donated blood for the first time w/my daughter, and we both fainted), it does my heart good to read your blog, and be inspired by your creative juices.

Your mom must be so proud of you, Meredith!

It makes us so happy to hear that you found a few things here that inspired you after a tough day! Reading all the great blogs out there and DIY-ing are what we do when weve had one. (Staplegunning is therapeutic!) Again, so glad to have you following along! Your encouragement makes OUR days!

  3. Love your style! Can you tell me a little bit about the curtains you had around your bed in the NYC apartment? I love that idea. How did you hang them? Also, you are so fearless about painting an apartment! I would not want to have to do all that work when I move out, so I just dont bother. Sigh.

    • Meredith & Gwyneth says:

Hi Diane! Thank you! So glad you stopped by! The curtains around the bed are a DIY and could not be easier! Just a very long piece of linen fabric with pom pom trim sewn on. Then I installed two swing arm cranes at the ceiling and draped the fabric over them! So glad to have you reading!
